Massachusetts artists The Mendes Brothers have attained wild success bringing Cape Verdean and Angolan music to a forefront. Born on the island of Fogo, João and Ramiro Mendes emigrated to the US in the late 70's, forming a band and furthering their education in music and production at Berklee in Boston. Through their own label, MB Records, they have recorded and produced numerous World and African albums, and their client list includes Heineken Beer, RDF Television, Grassroots Pictures, BMG, Iris Musique, and World Connections, among many others.
The Mendes brothers received several Grammy Ballot Nominations for American RnB albums featuring Elissa Jones (This Melodie) and Antonio TC Cruz (Self-Titled). "Cabo Verde" is The Mendes Brothers’ latest release in their quest to innovate and transform Cape Verdean music, and it received great critical acclaim. In 2006, the Mendes Brothers were recognized by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Dr. José Maria Neves, with a “Medal of Merit” for their invaluable contribution to the music of Cape Verde. Artists that have been produced by Mendes Brothers include Bana, Tito Paris, Gil Semedo, Kafala Brothers, Tino Trimó, Talulu, Agusto Cego, Gardenia Benros, Mirri Lobo, Djosinha, and Sãozinha.
