TOMBSTONE (female)


Tombstone, in the year of 1885,
was a bad place to be (in)
if you wanted to stay alive.
There were tricksters, card-sharps,
and thieves by the score;
murderers, conmen - and many a whore.

Then came the day when
you rode into town -
on a white stallion
and when the people looked around
they saw a handsome man
who wore a sheriff’s star,
who’d cleaned up many a place
with his quick fire Winchester.  

You were my hero, my champion
with shoulders broad and strong; 
at night you’d play the guitar
and sing me a cowboy song:
by day you’d face down 
some evil outlaw gang,
to everyone you were just -
the bravest, bravest man.

But now your six guns are holstered
and hanging on the wall.
The lonely nights are drawing in
as summer turns to fall:
I’ve laid out your silver spurs
and brushed down your Stetson hat –
even though I know you’re never,
never coming back -
even though I know you’re never,
never coming back.
 
You were the fastest man
that we’d ever seen draw;
and within just one year
you’d laid down the law.
Tombstone then was a safe place
for us all to live –
I became your lover –
you had so much more to give. 
 
You were my hero, my champion

by day you’d face down 
some evil outlaw gang,
to everyone you were just -
the bravest, bravest man.

But then a bunch of cowards
who you could not see,
put down a deadly ambush
as you walked along the street:
they shot you from behind
and tore us apart:
you died in my arms –
a bullet through your heart.
