This acoustic piano piece has one of those few beloved melodies which stand out from all the others in history. If I were to use numbers, I would rate the main melody in this piece as one of the top 10 of the last 500 years. It's very familiar and well loved.   Keywords: bluesy singable 1920's George Gershwin came along in the first part of the 20th century (born in 1898) and at a young age became a music innovator. He and his brother Ira, as is well-known, collaborated on many songs - Ira writing the lyrics and George the music. What may not be so well known is that they actually put together the very first Broadway musical. A wonderful tradition began with them. Although he was known primarily for his songs, the opera 'Porgy and Bess' and the piano concerto 'Rhapsody in Blue' are also very well known. He wrote only a few piano pieces, and this 'Blue Lullaby' is perhaps the best known. It's slow and almost mesmerizing at the beginning and end. There is a middle section which picks up and big and is quite jazzy, with a syncopated melody in the left hand. Then back to the original haunting melody.
