I Should Have Smelt It:

I should have seen it in the way
His eyes lit up when mine dulled.
I should have smelt it in mismatching
Stories, that his mouth spilled.
I should have heard it in the laugh,
Which had too many peaks.
I should have felt it in the hug 
He treated like a treat.
He was a self-lover!
Cool, as long as he was looking cool.
Fell for it myself, but I
was only made a temporary fool.
He said, “Normal people, like us!”
As though he were my ally.
And those words worked to distract from
What were reptilian eyes.
I'm guilty of seeing, in men,
Only familiar traits.
I should have smelt the swallowed rat
In the exhale of the snake.
He was a self-lover!

And he told me that truth hurts!
And people never say quite what they mean.
Not sure I know what's worse,
Seeing things alone, or leaving things unseen.
