Prolific US Composer Roger Lasher Nortman has written 24 symphonies, 12 concerti for various instruments, six quartets, and several other chamber works. Among his many awards was The Beaux Arts Society's 2000 winner of Leonardo da Vinci's "Best Composer" award, the first such winner since 1997. Roger studied at the Julliard School of Music and has a Columbia University Master of Arts degree in Music Education. Exposed to the symphonic environment, he began composing on the piano as a kid but found his true medium in orchestral music.


Roger Lasher Nortman began composed mostly for the piano but created his First Symphony in 1974. Drawing upon his vast musicological study of the 19th Century Romantic symphony, he created large-scale abstract symphonic works, often (especially in his earlier symphonies) of Bruckner and Mahler proportions. The emotional aura which he projects in his symphonic works has been cited by listeners for its dramatic, theatrical impact.

Roger has had many symphonies and concerti played by several New York Orchestras, most notably Manhattan School of Music; and two symphonies played by the Poznan Philharmonic in Poland. Also, as a musicologist, he has appeared on radio and television to discuss lesser known but highly talented 19th Century Romantic Symphonists who had such a vital influence on his own eclectic, yet selective and inquisitively forged, yet highly unpredictable style.
