Based in New York Otar & the Wolf is a duo comprised of two classically trained musicians and friends who live and work in a little red brick walk-up above a family-owned French bistro in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Together they produce Soul, Indie, and Jazz music spun askew with an Eastern European flair. Often likened to artists such as the Kinks, Tom Waits, and Wilco, these boys bank on sharp songwriting, roomy raw arrangements, and elegant acoustic musicality. Otar, named after a famed Georgian classical composer of the same name (his grandfather), works nights as an emergency room physician in a busy trauma center. The Wolf is Maxx Loup, multi-instrumentalist, and teacher from Colorado. Stripped down in a live setting (which could be a club in Chelsea or a tunnel in Central Park), they do lots of whistling/growling/stomping/singing/clapping/howling, often supported by the bustling sounds of the city.
Since coming together in 2012 through a shared interest in Stevie Wonder, Otar & the Wolf have been writing and recording together in their little hideaway above the French restaurant, building up quite a stash of tracks. You can also find them performing all around this hectic city busking and doing regular gigs at memorable venues such as the American Folk Art Museum.
Otar & the Wolf's music has been featured in multiple online Podcasts, Radio, and Indie films including "New York I Love You," "Cellar Dwellers," and "Sweet Potato Soul." They have appeared on TV for Good Morning Iowa on Channel 7 to perform their Folk hit "International Drinking Song."
