This Afro-Cuban dance genre, similar to Salsa and Rumba, was popular during the 1940's and 50's and became part of the big band sound of the 1950s. Performed by the Cuban conjunto, it included an ensemble of voice, trumpets, and rhythm sections. The rhythm sections would include a bass, conga, and timbale or cowbell. Moderate to rapid tempos are common in Mambo rhythm and brass or reed riffs are common as well. Mambo was brought to America in the 1940's and eventually adapted as an American ballroom dance. Most of the movements emphasize the second beat in the measure, suggestive of the clave rhythm which is fundamental to Mambo music.
