Californian Brian Hazard, the artist behind the Electronic project Color Theory, grew up listening to The Cure, Depeche Mode, and The Smiths. The brooding undercurrent of heartbreak, suffering, and alienation never brought him down. He found it oddly comforting, even uplifting. His songs explore the pleasure in sadness through the distinctive brand of melancholy Synthwave, resulting in intensely personal and highly emotive tunes. With a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, he left Beethoven to pursue his inspiration.
Career highlights of Brian Hazard's Color Theory include winning the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, songs in the hit video games Rock Band and Just Dance, and several song placements on MTV's The Real World. Hazard is currently working on his 10th full-length Color Theory release, a retro-nostalgic project inspired by 1980s film soundtracks.
Anyone who took music lessons as a kid calls themselves “classically trained, ” but Hazard went the distance, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. Immediately after graduation, he left Beethoven and Brahms behind to pursue his first musical inspiration, Depeche Mode.
The line between inspiration and imitation blurred when Hazard’s song Ponytail Girl spread like wildfire on Napster, mislabeled as a Depeche Mode b-side. “It’s pretty neat to be mistaken for your favorite band, ” he laughs. Hazard used the incident as the basis for a tribute album, Color Theory presents Depeche Mode.
