Based in Russia, Terem Quartet was founded by students of the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory’s Folk Instrument Department. The group first performed in public in 1986 and quickly became a phenomenon in the music world. They play soprano and alto domra, bayan accordion, and double bass, and they intertwine technical skill, depth of feelings, intelligence, and sparkling humor into each note. The Terem Quartet have created their unique style known as “Russian Crossover," or “Teremism," as Rock icon Peter Gabriel called it.
Terem Quartet’s success came to the ensemble with their first concert. They combined and intertwined various musical directions and, going beyond the scope of the genre, created “Russian crossover” or “Teremism. ” The basis of this style is a variety of tools, genres, and creative ideas. Over the 30 years of its existence, the Terem Quartet has given over 3,000 concerts, toured 65 countries of the world, and recorded two dozen discs. They played at the Vatican before the Pope and Mother Theresa, in front of Prince Charles at the St. James's Palace, at the Summit of the Grand Universe in St. Petersburg, at the Olympics in Barcelona, London, Vancouver, and Sochi, at the Eurovision contests in Moscow. The repertoire of the Terem Quartet includes programs with piano, violin, cello, chamber and symphony orchestras.
