Derek McCorkell is a Singer and Songwriter based out of Minnesota, but that's not where he originated from. Listen to his music, and his origins become clear almost immediately -- the lilt of the Irish brogue shines through magnificently. Derek is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist with a vocal style reminiscent of Davy Arthur of Davy Arthur & The Fureys fame. Though Country music is Derek's primary genre, he writes and composes in many other genres that can be found here on Audiosparx. Have a listen, and enjoy!
Derek was born in 1953 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and he later moved to Ballymena where he resided for nigh on 35 years. Writing and performing music has been in his blood from an early age, having acquired his first guitar at the tender age of 14 which survived about a year before being summarily smashed over the head of his younger brother David for laughing at Derek whilst he learned to play the instrument. Needless to say, this halted his progress on the guitar considerably until he saved up enough money to purchase another one. After a few years of studious learning, Derek decided he was good enough to join a band, and the musical journey thus was embarked upon.
And what a journey it was to be. For many years, he toured extensively around Europe sharing stages with many much more famous names. All the while, he crafted his art of songwriting and musical composition. 10 years ago Derek decided up uproot his life and embark on yet one more journey, a journey that led him to where he is today, Minnesota USA. A far cry from the back streets of "Derry," but while can take the man out of Ireland, you can't take Ireland out of the man.
