Roger Lasher Nortman
Roger Lasher Nortman is a prolific composer who has written twenty-four symphonies, twelve concerti for various instruments, six quartets and several other chamber works. He has won many awards The Beaux Arts Society's year 2000 winner of Leonardo da Vinci's "Best Composer" award the first such winner since 1996. Mr. Nortman has studied at the Julliard School of Music and has a Columbia University Master of Arts degree in Music Education. Having been exposed to the symphonic environment at a very early age, Mr.
Nortman, who had previously composed mostly for the piano, found his true medium, the full orchestra when he began composing his First Symphony in 1974. He draws upon his vast musicological study of the 19th Century Romantic symphony to create large-scale abstract symphonic works, often (especially in his earlier symphonies) of Bruckner and Mahler proportions. The emotional aura which he projects his symphonic works has been cited by listeners for its dramatic, theatrical impact. Mr. Nortman has had many symphonies and concerti played by several New York Orchestras (most notably Manhattan School of Music); and two symphonies played by the Poznan Philharmonic in Poland. Also, as a musicologist he has appeared on radio and television to discuss lesser known but highly talented 19th Century Romantic Symphonists who have had such a vital influence on his own eclectic, yet selective and inquisitively forged, yet highly unpredictable style.
