Karmic Kick is the brainchild of versatile songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rikus Nieuwenhuis from the Netherlands. Working with various studios and collaborating with local talent, Karmic Kick produces powerful Rock songs polished by a plethora of melodies and harmonies, and the result is a fresh mixture of Pop and Rock music.
Karmic Kick's The Skies Between and Beyond is a panoramic past life review, a reflection on life in 2010, and a statement of future intent. The twinned discs find Nieuwenhuis working in two apparently diametrically opposing musical styles, and the result is playful, uncompromising, and introspective. The set presents the listener with an experience remarkable for its breadth and duality. "Between" provides gorgeously lush textures to obliquely spiritual lyrics, while the surface heaviness of "Beyond" hides a wealth of melody and tunefulness.
The Skies Between sees multi-instrumentalist Nieuwenhuis doing double duty on drums and guitars, while Sarah Hill provides gorgeously lush textures to his obliquely spiritual lyrics. As on both discs, Leon van der Westhuizen handles bass duties with a serpentine, melodic grace to compliment the piano's heavenly presence.
The Skies Beyond presents a harder edge, with Kevin Rule's vocals finding sure footing in Nieuwenhuis' dense, heavy rhythms and punchy guitar. The surface heaviness hides a wealth of melody and tunefulness that reveals itself in stages on repeat listens.
