Leisur Hive, one of the most visceral, intense and interesting UK bands of the last decade, was first formed by Daniel Knowler and Maria Vellanz after a chance meeting 13 years after they first met as children. With Maria's punk-spirited enthusiasm and Dan's background in Suicide-esque rock band Proton Wedding, they began Leisur Hive as an attempt to fuse angular, percussive forms with intensely emotional songwriting. The line-up was solidified with the addition of longtime friends and collaborators Mark Bishop and Robert Allen (also of Australian noise duo Halo).
Leisur Hive's close-to-the-bone, emotional performances, echoing distorted soundscapes and throbbing, thunderous basslines have often been compared to such sonic individualists as Joy Division, Swans, Cop Shoot Cop and The Fall, but Leisur Hive remains solely focused on their own wayward path.
They have gained a reputation for their exhilarating, cathartic live shows across the UK and Europe.
In 2008 Leisur Hive released their fourth official studio album, 'The Soft Column', which brings to fruition the off-kilter sound of Leisur Hive's live performances and defines their aesthetic of merging slabs of growling rhythm with emotive shimmering songwriting.
Ethereal arabesque strings and snakey reverb-laden guitars snake themselves around a growling bass line and machine-like rhythm. Layers of haunting atmospheres swirling like fog around a distant factory. Eerie and disturbing yet strangely catchy. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Emo
A gently unfolding folk-noir song with low, understated vocals and minimalist, atmospheric slide guitar reminiscent of Morricone or Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack work. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
Thunderous and infectious, Leisur Hive's "big" song from The Soft Column. Rolling primitive toms and grinding bass explode into a soaring chorus followed closely by swirling psyche-guitar effects. If The Strokes were more paranoid and psychedelic... Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Alt Rock
A bursting breath and sparkling chords clash with stark stabbing drums. Dissonance and noise belie a gloriously loud pop hook which breaks apart only to build itself up into a spookier Pixies or a spikier Interpol. Perfect for tense, fast visual sequences. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Alt Rock
The creepy little sister of "Interval 1". The familiar melody swirls under layers of tape echo and stoic, funeral organs. Augmented by warm pianos and minimal percussion, this song generates a spooky, dense atmosphere while also keeping a sense of pop melody. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
Warm trip-hoppy grooves and subtle yet tense drones gradually build up to a chaotic crescendo of dissonant violins and shattered noise. Eerie melodies and spooky atmospherics give way to an epic finale. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Alt Rock
A pulsing, dynamic song with surreal lyrics and a chugging, tense rhythm which threatens to explode but holds back just enough to allow the dark atmosphere room to echo into the distance. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
Spacious dubby rhythms and distorted cascading strings. A low slung moody and experimental production; but somewhere beneath the disintigrating samples lurks a canny, infectious pop song. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
A slowly building, epic drone-rock cityscape of crumbling textures, dissonant yet bluesy guitar tones and industrious percussion which shape-shifts into a maximalist, intoxicating mantra of Mogwai-esque proportions. Male Vocals, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
