Leisur Hive, one of the most visceral, intense and interesting UK bands of the last decade, was first formed by Daniel Knowler and Maria Vellanz after a chance meeting 13 years after they first met as children. With Maria's punk-spirited enthusiasm and Dan's background in Suicide-esque rock band Proton Wedding, they began Leisur Hive as an attempt to fuse angular, percussive forms with intensely emotional songwriting. The line-up was solidified with the addition of longtime friends and collaborators Mark Bishop and Robert Allen (also of Australian noise duo Halo).
Leisur Hive's close-to-the-bone, emotional performances, echoing distorted soundscapes and throbbing, thunderous basslines have often been compared to such sonic individualists as Joy Division, Swans, Cop Shoot Cop and The Fall, but Leisur Hive remains solely focused on their own wayward path.
They have gained a reputation for their exhilarating, cathartic live shows across the UK and Europe.
In 2008 Leisur Hive released their fourth official studio album, 'The Soft Column', which brings to fruition the off-kilter sound of Leisur Hive's live performances and defines their aesthetic of merging slabs of growling rhythm with emotive shimmering songwriting.
A short spiky blast of tight, galloping rhythms, punky guitars and declamatory megaphone vocals. Big shards of off-kilter noise: the musical equivalent of a shower of rusty knives. On wheels. Instrumental, Gothic, Post-Punk
Thunderous ritualistic drumming and bold stately bass underly a dark psychedelic melody. Chiming sinous guitars tones and sampled textures. A slow yet bracing mix of post punk atmosphere and garage-rock attack. Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
A grinding, sleazy groove propelled by a chugging whopper of a bassline and slippery slide guitars. Layers of electronic effects and echo-laden violins add an uneasy sea-sickness to this monstrous racket. Like The Birthday Party playing Angelo Badalamenti's The Pink Room. Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
Big bold and throbbing with a dark yet catchy melodic line. Like a darker, more shadowy version of New York garage rock haunted by the ghosts of UK post-punk. An explosive ramshackle chorus bursts out like a drunken, out-of-control juggernaut veering off the highway. Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
Somewhere between The Birthday Party and Einsturzende Neubauten, this is a pounding, rocking, slab of rhthmic post-punk.. all solid angles, chaotic guitars and declamatory vocals. Just as the repetition builds to a trance-like state, it explodes into an epic post-rock crescendo. Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
The loud/quiet dynamic of classic alt-rock twisted into new shapes by Leisur Hive's thumping tribal rhythms, layers of alien sound and terse echoing vocals. Early Swans meets Voivod! Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
Rolling toms and chainsaw guitars thunder on relentlessly dragging broken melodies and a deceptively uplifting chorus with them into the desert. Discipline and chaos fighting for space in this big, bold post-punk noise.. You know there is no control... Male Vocals, Gothic, Post-Punk
