"Strong melodies, powerful lyrics, and attractive yet simple acoustic arrangements. Colin Black's songs are deeply personal and yet also incredibly accessible. This is folk music with heart and soul, as well as intelligence and insight." Colin has lived in many places across the US, Europe and around the world, but his soulful inspiration began in the Alabama Gulf Coast region, and is still evident in his music today.
COLIN BLACK is an Americana/folk singer-songwriter hailing from the Gulf Coast of Alabama – by way of central Illinois, via New Orleans, recently back after five years living in Europe, and now based in Washington, D. C. (Yep, it’s a long story.) With a style evocative of such songwriters as Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen, Colin’s songs are at once deeply personal and incredibly accessible. Born in 1974 in Peoria, Illinois, Colin grew up in a small town beside the Illinois River. As a teenager, he began spending his summers in the small Gulf Coast community of Josephine, Alabama. Miles from the nearest city, the most common entertainment was acoustic music – song circles and late night jams in which locally renowned and unknown musicians alike would grab their guitars and mandolins or just sing along to everything from old folk standards to songs by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Nanci Griffith, the Grateful Dead and many others.
anthem about leaving it all behind and striking out on a new life, and wondering whether the woman of my dreams will understand and come along for the ride, Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Melancholy melody and instrumentation juxtapose an ultimately uplifting lyric about turning over a new leaf in the new year, letting "the future outshine the past." Guitars, cello, and violin make this a stirring if sullen version. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
This song is based on a true story. It's about ordinary people in small town America, the Midwest, and how they overcame lots of hard times - pregnant too young, marriage troubles, work troubles, etc. - to raise two fabulous boys and be in love (still or again, you decide) 15 years later. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
This is an ode to Alabama, and specifically to the place I call home on the Gulf Coast. It (the place and the song too) has a timeless, universal quality, even though it's personal. Guitar, vocals, and cuatro. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Dark song about dreaming of being with the one he's lost, but realizing each time that it's just a dream. Brooding powerful lyrics matched by a really ethereal lap steel solo over guitar. Male vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Sippin' on tequila on Saturday night... Evocative male vocals, looking for love, hopeful and nostalgic. What to do when love goes south. Cool romantic breakup music for country themes, couples having a hard time. Male Vocals, Country, Country Traditional
This song is about being on the road, especially for a musician, about the loneliness one feels despite being around people all the time. It's also about making a connection with someone, which has a life of its own even though they'll never see one another again. Guitar, harmonica, and vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Song about dreaming about a loved one, waking up and realizing it's just a dream, but ultimately giving in because it's better to be dreaming together than awake and apart. Mixed Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Melancholy song about living without the one you would like to be with. Guitars, male vocals, and some really nice harmonica. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Song about the pure joy of loving one's partner and wanting nothing more than to share every second with them. Guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and male vocals with female backing vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Sweet and almost paranoic meditation on not wanting to wake up a lover for fear that it will break the magic. Guitar, male vocals, and gorgeous cello and fiddles give this great texture. Perfect for film/TV. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
This tender song tells the story of my wife's grandfather losing his wife and the way I imagined him trying to deal with it. Simple and touching lyrics with a sparse acoustic guitar and vocals instrumentation. Sad but beautiful. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
This is a dark but beautifully told account of the last minutes before a suicide, as the person sits alone, forsakes hope, and reminisces on how he got there. Haunting performance with guitar, dobro, and male vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Eery meditation on what the singer will do if he can't get over his love, including losing himself in the ocean, in the desert, in his music... Simple arrangement of acoustic guitar with male vocals and female backing vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
This is a song about young love denied (her father forbids it), and about trying to move on without much success. Some people never get past a love like this. Cuatro (like a guitar meets mandolin), vocals, and a driving harmonica. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
Joyful, uplifting piano instrumentation offsets a somewhat plaintive meditation about whether the one the singer is thinking about is also thinking about him. Piano, guitars, male vocals. Male Vocals, Folk, Contemporary Folk
