Shuang Long Tou is an exciting new project combining the virtuostic erhu skills of Adam Liu, Chinese-born and raised Assistant Principal Cello for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Maestro Colin O'Donohoe (The Pangean Orchestra). These two master musicians meld traditional material and contemporary concepts, creating an array of exquisite pieces for the Erhu, a traditional Chinese 2-stringed bowed instrument. The sound of the erhu instantly evokes images of China, Asian culture, and the dynasties of the past.
Maestro Colin O’Donohoe has worked with amazing orchestras and musicians throughout his young career. He spent over two years as Conductor and Artistic Director for a Chinese ensemble called the “New Moon Orchestra." His current orchestra, “The Pangean Orchestra,” is a global ensemble that combines instruments from all continents and centuries into a groundbreaking orchestra that is the subject of a documentary called “Immigrant Orchestra,” for which a preview can be seen on Vimeo.
Adam Liu began musical study of the erhu during the waning days of Mao Zedong. His talent was noticed at an early age, and he was soon performing at gala events in cities of northeastern China. Upon the death of Mao, Mr. Liu became a cellist of virtuoso abilities, enabling him to become one of the first artists to leave China to study in the US. This led to appointments with major symphony orchestas, recently as Associate Principal Cello with the Montreal Symphony and currently as Assistant Principal Cello with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Concurrently Mr. Liu is Artist in Residence and Professor of Cello at Duquesne University. He performs on a dragon-head erhu from China.
