i’ve been dark 

i’ve been distant 

living deep within my head 

if I surface 

eyes adjust 

fumble forward out of bed 

 

i’ve been too long holding judgement 

from the corners of my cell 

i accept no visitation 

few can navigate this well 

 

sanctuary 

 

you keep pounding 

on this temple 

try to break through all this stone 

you’re the pull 

against this anchor 

only light that brings me home 

 

you’re the calm against this bluster 

the stubborn string of hope 

you’re the ever-present ladder 

the only one who knows 

 

sanctuary 

 

getting dark 

feeling distant 

climbing back inside my head 

draw the blinds 

cut the lights
