The singer had a nasty cough
The drummer shouted “knock it off”
The rockers didn’t seem to care

I remember it like yesterday
The club was called the DOA
All they ever did was stare

The band was really wailing but it seemed a mystery
Why the dance floor stayed empty
What reason could there be?
So I asked a bonehead bouncer; had they fallen into a trance?
He said “Here there ain’t no license to dance”

I couldn’t feature what I heard
Boy these people had some nerve
I didn’t like ‘em messing with me

They wanna have a rocking band 
And tell the people not to dance
Doesn’t make sense to me

Nobody even moved a muscle 
When they said “Here’s one by Gene”
The mobile phones were ringing
It was like a dreadful dream
I wanted to shout something; get up and take a chance
Because we don’t need no license to dance

I must’ve heard her coming 
As the clock was just a striking ten
And I was getting ready to go

Like a vision then I saw
She was stepping on the floor

So they showed her to the door

I wanted to grab her quick
But the crowd was getting thick
And I was trapped with these fools

The last thing that I remember
Before it all turned black
The cats had left the bandstand
And they weren’t coming back
The techno beat was blaring
The DJ wore plastic pants
He said “Now you’ve all got a license to dance”
