Based in NYC, Mike Stein is a composer, arranger, and pianist who works in the Dramatic, Orchestral, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, and World genres, among many others. Bernard Purdie, the world’s most recorded drummer, noticed Mike’s versatility and skill as a performer and writer and decided to make him his primary co-producer, arranger, and conductor. As a graduate of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Mike collaborated with Sonny Kompanek, best known for his work on several Coen Brother films and the movie "The Good Shepard."
Over the years, Mike Stein has performed and/or recorded with: Tommy DeCarlo (Boston), Steve Augieri (Journey), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel), Glen Burtnik (Styx, Electric Light Orchestra), George Naha (Sam & Dave, Darlene Love, Wilson Pickett), Steve Jankowski (BS&T, Don Henley and Shakira), Tom Timko (BS&T, Don Henley), Antonique Smith (RENT, the movie Notorious), Tony Shanahan (Patti Smith), Rashidra Scott (HAIR, Avenue Q), Marc Muller (Shania Twain), Tom Brislin (YES, Meat Loaf), Patti Smyth, Marc Pender, and Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg, among others. For television, Mike wrote string arrangements that were featured on the WHYY network program "On Canvas."
