After immigrating to the US in 1962, German composer Helmut Calabrese studied at many top schools with a host of renowned music educators. His first public work came courtesy of the Statue of Liberty’s Centennial Celebration in 1986. He composed the music and his brother Paul Lutz Calabrese wrote the lyrics to the song “The Most Beautiful Lady in the World: Statue of Liberty Anthem.” Their contribution to the event was well received and later designated as the “Official Anthem of the Statue of Liberty" by the New Jersey State Legislature.
At the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, where Helmut earned his Bachelor of Music in composition, his teachers included Richard Everill, Theodore Antoniou, and Andrew Rudin. At New York University, where he earned his Ph. D. in composition, his teacher was Ron Mazurek. At the Berklee College of Music, Calabrese studied Film Scoring techniques with Michael Rendish.
He was awarded the 2012 Best International Traditional Movie Music Award at the Garden State Film Festival for his music on the Italian feature film Il Gioco È Fatto, and he has also received ASCAPLUS awards from 2003 to 2009 by ASCAP.
